DESCRIPTION:Jail Training Officer CertificationLodgingTraining InformationRegistrationContact Us\n\n\n\nThe Jail Training Officer’s primary goal is to prepare the newly hired trainee to perform at an acceptable level and become an asset to the jail division. During this process\, the JTO will train\, observe\, and evaluate the progress of each trainee. The mission of each JTO is to give each trainee the utmost opportunity to succeed in his training\, correct the trainee when mistakes are made\, and maximize the safety of the trainee. In addition\, this is the JTO’s introduction to leadership and advisory skills. This 40-hour training course will provide the JTO the knowledge and skills required as they prepare for future supervisory positions. \n\n\n\nEmployees of Georgia’s Sheriff’s offices serving as jail officers\, demonstrating excellent knowledge of jail operations and exhibiting a desirable work ethic and commitment to excellence\, possessing very good interpersonal skills and a willingness to train newly appointed jail officers\, are excellent candidates as part of their respective facility’s Jail Training and Evaluation Program. \n\n\n\nUpon passing the test and meeting the employment requirements\, the student may apply for his JTO Certification through POST. \n\n\n\nPre-requiste: The student must be a P.O.S.T. certified jail officer with a minimum of three years jail officer experience\, with the past year serving with your current agency. \n\n\n\n\n\nHotel Accommodations must be sought by the student\, requesting the hotel’s government rate. Therefore\, a student is dismissed from the course if more than two hours of the course is missed.\n\n\n\nA written test scoring 80% or higher\, AND passing the final practical\, is required to pass this course. If the student fails the test or the practical\, P.O.S.T\, rules dictate a retest is NOT optional nor will the student receive credit for the course. The course must be attended in its entirety again.\n\n\n\nDress is business casual; no t-shirts. Jeans are allowed if neat and in good repair. Instructors to receive valuable training and allow for essential networking opportunities for instructors across the state. To maintain an effective teaching edge\, C.H.A.M.P.S. instructors must be provided with knowledge on current teaching trends and other vital resources to maintain a positive image and provide young students with a secure learning environment\, which fosters good public relations between the public and the Sheriff’s Office. In addition\, this three day conference will meet the MOU requirements to send every instructor to a refresher course a minimum of every three years to sustain his/her instructor status in good standing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSea Palms Resort515 N. Sheriffs learn and share vital information through one-on-one interaction and networking with fellow sheriffs.  In addition to the classroom training sessions\, vendors are also present to demonstrate cutting-edge products\, technology and services.  The Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes and Georgia Sheriffs’ Association annual banquets will be a combined event and we will honor our Youth of the Year\, Sheriff of the Year and install officers for both organizations.  \n\n\n\nSheriffs can earn up to 11 training hours. \n\n\n\nThe training location is: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe following revisions to the GSA Constitution and By-Laws were approved and adopted by the GSA Board of Directors and presented to the membership on October 21\, 2025 : \n\n\n\nAttendance by Retired or Former Sheriffs: \n\n\n\nRetired or Former Sheriffs shall not attend annual meetings unless the Active Member from the Former or Retired Sheriff’s county where he or she served submits a written letter of approval to the Executive Director and the President allows the Retired or Former Sheriff to attend. \n\n\n\nAttendance by Sheriff’s Office Employees – Please submit the written request for approval to Executive Director Terry Norris at jtnorris@georgiasheriffs.org \n\n\n\nActive Members are permitted to allow their employees to attend exhibitor functions during sheriffs’ annual training conferences.  Employees of sheriffs’ offices are not allowed to attend training sessions during sheriffs’ annual training conferences unless specifically authorized by the Executive Committee.   \n\n\n\n\n\nThe GSA Board of Directors has adopted a dress code policy for all GSA training events. \n\n\n\nAcceptable attire includes collared shirt and pants or agency uniform.   \n\n\n\nNo shorts\, flip flops\, or hats allowed during training.  \n\n\n\n\n\nLegacy Lodge at Lake Lanier7000 Lanier Islands ParkwayBuford\, GA 30518 \n\n\n\nRoom Rate: Single or Double $229 per room/per nightNOTE: Additional Georgia Hotel fee of $5.00 per room per night \n\n\n\nParking: Self-parking.
